What are the Healthiest High Protein and Low Fat Protein Bars
Using the Outdoor Food Club discovery tool which has a few hundred energy and protein bars in it’s database, there are 17 completely whole foods based protein bars and 75 bars which are completely or mostly wholefoods.
We are using this as the basis for what is a healthy protein bar. A wholefood is an ingredient which hasn't been processed and generally has ingredients made of fruit, seeds and nuts and other wholefoods, these are the most common protein bar ingredients that you will find which are wholefoods.
We would like to point out that every food item here has been brought up at the time of writing because they rank well and specifically for the queries we are bringing up. We continually add new food items to the food discovery database which means that new food items can take the top spots here on this page.
This means you're always up to date as the tables below update automatically, the last thing we want to do is share old foods that are outdated by new manufacturer releases and protein bars.
Healthy Protein Bars And Wholefood Ingredients
In regards to just the healthiest protein bars, as we have questioned them, with completely wholefoods, you will find that Bounce, Epic, and Lifebar protein bars and energy balls are brands and manufacturers of protein bars that come up.
The problem with this requirement is that It's very hard to find a protein bar that is all three, healthy, high protein and low fat because out of the nearly 200 protein bars in the database, you will find that most protein bars tick two of those requirements, but not all three.
Here we'll look in to the options and see what we learn about the options available in the protein bar and supplements market.
Sugars In Protein Bars
We just mentioned processed foods and whole foods as an indicator of health, if we look at some of the other indicators and ingredients which may dictate how healthy a protein bar is.
There is a sugar filter on the discovery tool where you can show foods without a specific sugar or sweetener or in this case, show protein bars which have naturally present sugars and no added sugars.
There are a lot of different types of sugars and most of them are highly processed. There are a few that aren't such as honey and maple syrup. If you want these specifically in your protein bars, head to the discovery tool and filter by these sugars.
Below you can see protein bars which are filtered by those which specifically have no added sugars and high protein or low fat.
High Protein and Low Fat Protein Bars
Here we look at the entire range of protein bars in the database to get a feel as to what is a high protein, protein bar and a low fat protein bar.
High Protein, Protein Bar
You will find that the top 50 protein bars from the entire database of protein bars with the highest protein range between 0.33g and 0.42g of protein per gram, so that is a 33-42% protein density of the highest protein, protein bars.
To put this in to perspective, the lowest we have ranked a protein bar is that with 0.15g of protein per gram.
The bottom 50 of the 193 protein bars in the database at the time of writing have between 0.15g and 0.23g of protein per gram.
This means that those with high protein have at least 0.1g which is 10% more protein at a minimum for those with high protein.
Low Fat Protein Bars
The top 50 protein bars lowest in fat out of nearly 200 bars have between 0.05g and 0.12g of fats per gram. That is a 5-12% fat content from the top 50 with the lowest amount of fat in a protein bar.
At the other end of the spectrum, those with the most fat have between 0.20g and 0.31g of fat per gram. This means that those with the least amount of fat have at least 0.08g less fat which is 8% less fat than those with the most.
Now that we know what is a high protein, protein bar and a low fat protein bar we can look at the options below.
Here you can find our top picks for protein bars which are healthy, have high protein and or low amounts of fat.
Healthiest and High Protein, Protein Bars
Here you can see healthy, completely whole food protein bars from the entire database of sports foods which are sorted by those with the most protein per gram, we don't rank by the protein in each serving as this is not a fair and accurate comparison metric.
We have worked out the protein per gram of every food item so we can clearly and fairly compare every food item against one another.
The Bounce Peanut Protein Energy Ball, it has 0.33g protein per gram. So that means that 33% of it’s content is protein. It comes out as top based on the whole foods protein bars. The rest have between 0.28g and 0.15g protein per gram, which is between 15–28% protein content.
If you want a vegan protein bar, look at the offerings by Bounce.
